Roughly 2500 square kilometres of rolling hills, farmland and urban centres make up Durham Region (or, as it is officially known, the Regional Municipality of Durham) east of Toronto. The lakeshore is highly urbanized while, to the north, suburbs and townships give way to farms and the beautiful expanse of the Oak Ridges Moraine running parallel to the lake.

Durham Region is comprised of eight municipalities: the cities of Oshawa and Pickering, the towns of Whitby and Ajax, the townships of Uxbridge, Brock and Scugog; and the municipality of Clarington. Each of these areas brings a unique flavour to the region, with charms for residents and visitors alike:

  • Oshawa has the largest population of the group and, as the home of General Motors Canada, is the hub of Canada’s automotive industry.
  • Pickering supplies energy to much of Ontario and was cited by Profit magazine in 2006 as one of the top ten cities in Canada to grow a business.
  • Whitby has one of Lake Ontario’s most splendid harbours and the town’s architectural heritage sets it apart.
  • Ajax is a WWII history buff‘s haven, having been named after a British ship that won a decisive naval victory against the Germans.
  • Uxbridge lies nestled in an Oak Ridges Moraine valley settled by Quakers and once home to ‘Anne of Green Gables’ author Lucy Maud Montgomery.
  • Brock sits on the shore of Lake Simcoe, providing ample opportunities for boating, fishing and enjoying the beach.
  • Scugog pulls in tourists visiting its charming villages like Port Perry and its First Nations casino.
  • Clarington boasts the longest stretch of the region’s beautiful waterfront trails and is home to the famous Mosport Speedway.

With its mix of farms and cities, suburbs and villages, on some of Ontario’s most beautiful land and waterways, the Durham Region is an attractive home for growing families and developing businesses.
